The upcoming Irish presidency of the EU Council of Ministers will be one of realism and optimism, Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore told reporters during a hand-over event in Brussels. Ireland, he said, hoped to become the first country to emerge from the EU/IMF bailout programme. […]

“The Irish EU Presidency comes at a decisive moment. In two weeks’ time, the December summit will agree a roadmap towards genuine Economic and Monetary Union. But is there less ambition than in June? Is there a risk that member states’ governments might fall into the trap of complacency?” said Janis Emmanouilidis, a senior policy analyst at the European Policy Centre.

“Ireland has a strong interest in the banking union, and wants to push it forward. The negotiations on the MFF will also be on Ireland’s watch. There’s a chance that a compromise will be found between member states, but then come negotiations with the European Parliament,” he said. [...]
